The Ultimate Guide to Brewing French Press Coffee

The Ultimate Guide to Brewing French Press Coffee

Why the French Press Is a Coffee Lover’s Favorite

Bold. Smooth. Full-bodied. The French Press is a classic brewing method that lets coffee’s natural oils shine through, creating a richer flavor profile than drip or pod coffee.

At Forever Brew, we love it for its simplicity, versatility, and ability to turn an ordinary morning into something special.

Whether you’re new to the French Press or looking to perfect your technique, this guide will walk you through every step.

What You’ll Need To Brew French Press Coffee

  • Freshly roasted coffee (coarse grind)
  • French Press (also called a press pot or plunger)
  • Hot water (195°F–205°F)
  • Measuring spoon or scale
  • Stirring utensil (wooden or plastic to avoid cracking the glass)

Step 1 – Choose Your Beans & Grind Size

A coarse grind is key for French Press brewing. Too fine, and you’ll end up with over-extraction and a bitter taste. Too coarse, and your coffee will be weak.

Tip: Our Bali Blue and African Espresso blends are perfect for the bold richness French Press brewing delivers.

Step 2 – Measure Your Coffee & Water Ratio

The golden ratio for French Press is 1:15 — one part coffee to 15 parts water.

  • For a standard 34 oz (1 liter) French Press, use about 56 grams (8 tablespoons) of coffee.

Step 3 – Bloom & Stir

Add coffee grounds to the press, pour in a small amount of hot water, and let it sit for 30 seconds. This “bloom” releases CO₂ and preps the grounds for even extraction. Stir gently.

Step 4 – Fill & Steep

Add the rest of your water, stir again, place the lid on with the plunger pulled up, and steep for 4 minutes.

Step 5 – Plunge & Pour

Slowly press the plunger down with steady pressure. Pour immediately to prevent over-extraction.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Grinding too fine – leads to bitterness and sludge in your cup.
  • Leaving coffee in the press – makes it taste overly strong and bitter.
  • Using boiling water – scorches the coffee and dulls the flavor.

Enjoy the Ritual

Part of the French Press magic is slowing down — watching the bloom, inhaling the aroma, and taking that first sip without hurry. It’s not just coffee; it’s a moment worth savoring.
